Disney's Rapunzel Is Becoming an Official Disney Princess

By mayavfx on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 with

It wasn't so long ago when Disney's 'Tangled' hit the big screen as the studios 50th film and wowing audiences with its 3D animation. This was a risky step for Disney as they would be compared against 3D animation veterans Pixar and Dreamworks. However, this was by no means a competition. The film had mixed reviews but was well received overall. Despite the change Disney had made, they still kept the magic and that special formula everyone loves. Besides, if it's not broke; don't fix it and this is exactly what Disney did. They played to their strengths and produced the one thing they're best at; a heart-warming fairy-tale.

The step towards 3D could be regarded as many things. Is Disney trying to keep up with the other studios animation techniques? Has 2D become less popular as a result? Or is this merely a tip of the hat towards Pixar and the ilk? I like to think it's the later. Yes, this was a risk for Disney, but the animation they created rivalled even that of Pixar. The reason for this is obvious when watching the film, but one thing stands out from the rest of the film. Every Disney movie will have songs in it, it's like a Disney rule and this can be seen as an obstacle for the animators, but they took on the challenge and produced something that looks flawless and may get you believing it was done with human actors initially.

The new Disney Princess, Rapunzel, is the star of 'Tangled' and will be the 10th member, joining Arial, Aurora, Belle, Cinderalla, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, Snow White and Tiana. This will mean that Rapunzel will be included in the merchandise line as well as getting her own.

To celebrate this, Disney have organised a celebration to welcome Rapunzel as a princess in London at Kensington Palace and Hyde Park, where girls of all ages will be able to join the party. But this is more than a celebration, it is also to educate children on real-life kings, queens and princesses.

"Our aim is to help everyone explore the stories of how monarchs and other royals have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built," added Ruth Gill, Head of Interpretation at Historic Royal Palaces.

It is no surprise that London would be centre stage for this event. Following the Royal Wedding and the Queen's Birthday, it is clear that London knows how to celebrate in Royal style, fitting for any Disney Princess.

All the other Disney Princesses will be joining Rapunzel at the celebrations followed by a procession through Hyde Park. Suffice it to say this will be a must-see event for Disney Fans.

Finally, this will also mean that guests to Disney parks will be able to meet Rapunzel wearing the stolen tiara, which was stolen by Flynn Rider in the film.
