Masters in Education Jobs

There are as many Masters in Education jobs as there are specialists in a school, a district or a department of education.  The MEd degree is a ticket to a professional career in education, whether in the classroom or in an office where educational policy is developed and executed.  The teaching specializations could fill an entire column; we touch on them here simply to designate the fact that many teachers today have master’s degrees and some states require a masters for a teaching license.  The administrative roles and the creative positions in educational development such as curriculum & instruction or instructional technology all are the province of professionals who have completed a MEd.  Our list below outlines the most common job opportunities associated with this degree.

  1. Elementary School Teacher is a general MEd curriculum for teaching all subjects in a classroom.  Behavior management is an important element for this career track, and most MEd programs have several courses on child psychology and on interacting not only with a child who has behavioral issues but with his or her parents as well.
  2. Middle School Teacher may be a MEd in general classroom teaching or may be a specialization in teaching mathematics for grades 6-8 or social studies, or perhaps earth sciences.  Some middle school credentials are for multiple topic teaching and some are for individual areas of study.
  3. Principal of a school is an job that pays well in virtually every public school; most of the men and women that work as principals hold a master’s degree although some have completed doctorates.  The job calls for polished diplomatic skills needed to manage a high-energy group of employees who teach for a living and all of the parents who have concerns.
  4. Instructional Technology Director today is in charge of much more than the computer lab that most schools use to introduce their students to computers.  In fact computer use extends to the classroom today and there are many more forms of technology used to make classroom presentations and to allow interactivity with the students in a digital format.
  5. School Superintendent generally designates the administrator for a school district, a senior management role.  This is another position that may be occupied by a MEd graduate or by someone who holds a PhD in Education or a EdD.  It can be a political role, because the school superintendent works with an elected school board to whom he or she is directly responsible – along with the students, teachers and parents.
  6. High School Teacher is usually a specialized role.  High school math teachers teach algebra to freshmen, and sophomores, calculus to juniors and advanced math to seniors.  Biology teachers may have classes in earth science as well as biology, chemistry teachers teach their specialty and English teachers manage four years of English classes.
  7. Special Education Teacher may work with children who have emotional and behavioral problems, or may work in another area supporting children with physical or learning disabilities.  There are three or four areas of specialization or special education and the profession is often further subdivided by age group.
  8. Curriculum and Instruction Specialist is the person who provides structure to classroom activities on a subject by subject basis.  Curriculum development goes hand in hand with instruction planning, which today is inseparable from instructional technology.  A curriculum and instruction manager has planning oversight for classroom activity, planning which is developed in conjunction with the teaching staff.
  9. School Counselor works with students who are exhibiting emotional or behavioral problems or who are having classroom difficulties.  In most instances problems with a student extend into the home, so an important part of this job is communicating with parents or guardians.  That is often the most challenging part of the job because too often parents are unwilling or incapable of taking guidance for working with their child.
  10. Instructional Designer is a specialist who actually designs the format for presentation of lessons or for longer periods of academic planning and teaching.  Instructional design is also an important function for corporate trainers and instructors.  Today in many cases instructional design is as much software programming as it is academic construction.
