Most of the degree programs available in mental health counseling in Missouri are at the master's degree level. Webster University and the University of Central Missouri are two schools that offer master's degree programs in counseling. Both programs include classes in assessing and treating mental disorders, professional counseling and ethics.
Webster University's Mental Health Counseling Programs
Founded in 1915, Webster University has its home campus in St. Louis, MO, and over 100 campuses at locations all around the globe. The mental health counseling program at Webster University is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs.
Master of Arts in Counseling (Professional Mental Health Counseling)
The master's program in counseling with an emphasis in professional mental health counseling educates students on the theoretical, practical and ethical aspects of mental health counseling. Students must complete a minimum of 60 credit hours of coursework. The mental health counseling curriculum includes courses in psychopathology, theories of counseling, assessment, psychopharmacology, professional orientation and ethical practice, substance abuse counseling and techniques of group counseling.
The theories of counseling course focuses on the application of counseling theories and methods to different client situations based on cultural and ethical considerations. The course on psychopathology covers the major mental illnesses and references the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The course on psychopharmacology teaches students the pharmacological actions and psychoactive effects of various drugs used in the treatment of mental disorders and drugs of abuse.
In addition to coursework, students must complete six credit hours of internship. Prior to graduation, students must pass the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Exam, a standardized test that assesses students' retention of course material.

University of Central Missouri's Mental Health Counseling Programs
The University of Central Missouri was established in 1871 as a teacher's college. Today, it offers 150 degree programs to over 11,000 students.
Master of Science in Counselor Education
The M.S. degree program in counselor education teaches students counseling techniques, professionalism, intervention and assessment and fosters an awareness of diversity and cultural issues. The program prepares students for careers in mental health counseling and school counseling. Graduates are employed at mental health centers, hospitals, clinics, counseling centers and schools. Graduates can also work as private practitioners.
Required coursework includes professional counseling and ethics, mental health issues in counseling, analysis and diagnosis of the individual, parent and family counseling, counseling theory and assessment. Completion of a counseling practicum and internship is also required. Students in the counselor education program are eligible for student membership in the American Counseling Association, the American Mental Health Counselor Association and the Missouri Mental Health Counselor Association.
